Seven Places to Use Body Butter

Warm a little body butter between your palms and it turns from soft peaks to a silky oil in a few seconds. That makes it useful well beyond your arms and legs. These are the seven places we reach for it most, and the one place we leave it off.

1. Cuticles, before bed

Rub a small amount into each nail bed at night, working it around the edges of the nail. Nothing washes it off while you sleep, so it has hours to soak in. Dry, ragged cuticles start to soften within a week or so of doing this nightly.

2. Heels, under socks

The soles of your feet have no oil glands of their own, which is why heels are so often the first thing to crack. Work a generous layer into your heels at night, then pull on a pair of cotton socks and sleep in them. The socks hold the butter against your skin instead of letting it rub off on the sheets.

3. Shins, after a shower

Shins have fewer oil glands than most of the body, which is why they're often the first place to flake once the heat comes on for the season. Smooth the butter over them while your skin is still a little damp from the shower, so it can seal that water in.

4. Elbows and knees

These are the first spots to turn rough and dry in cold weather. A little every night keeps them soft before they ever get there.

5. The dry ends of your hair

Use very little, about the size of a pea. Warm it between your fingertips and smooth it over the dry ends only, well away from your roots. A little tames flyaways and adds shine, while too much will leave your hair looking greasy.

6. A beard

Aura Ritual Butter was made with this in mind. It softens coarse beard hair and moisturizes the skin underneath, which is where most beard itch starts. Its white grapefruit, sweet orange, and patchouli essential oils are light enough to wear all day.

7. After shaving

Once your legs are dry, smooth on a thin layer to calm and soften freshly shaved skin. Skip it before you shave, though, since butter gums up a razor blade.

The one place we leave it off

Keep body butter off your face. Cocoa butter and coconut oil are rich enough to clog pores for some people, especially on the face, where skin is more prone to breakouts. Our Rose Tea Luxe Cream is made for the face instead, with a lighter texture that won't clog pores.

A little goes further than it looks. An amount the size of a dime covers both arms, so one jar lasts longer than most people expect.
